Take the Train to More Fairways

Most amateur golfers I know tell me they already know the fundamentals and want to work on more advanced swing thoughts. While this can be true in some circumstances, consider this: One of the most common causes of offline shots by the world’s best players is poor alignment. I am not going to tell you that every time a Tour player goes to the practice range he is using an alignment station, but I will tell you that at every single tour event you will find at least one player working on his or her alignment.

So no matter how advanced you think you may be, one of the best ways to start the year off right is to set up an alignment station at the range and make sure you are aiming where you think you are. If you have ever hit a shot that felt perfect only to have the ball fly on a rope into the trees, this drill is for you!

How to do it:

Stand behind your ball, take a golf club (that you are not going to hit balls with) and lie it on the ground so it forms a line from the ball DIRECTLY AT a target you have chosen. The butt end of this club should be roughly 1.5 feet in front of the golf ball. Next, take another club and place it along the same line, but this time 1.5 feet behind the ball. Lastly take a third club and lay it at your feet PARALLEL to the first two clubs, NOT AT THE TARGET!!! These three clubs will help you to visualize “train tracks” with the right rail in a line with the target and the left rail running parallel to it. Keep your body lined up to the left rail to help ensure that you are aimed where you should be!

Happy Practicing!!
